Paul Grisanti moved to Malibu in 1978. Over the past 45 years, Paul has become a vital member of the community. In 2020, Paul was elected to the Malibu City Council, where he served as the Mayor for two terms. In addition to his work on the Malibu City Council, Paul is currently a member of Malibu’s Arson Watch, the Malibu West Fire Brigade and Malibu’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
Paul grew up in Atascadero, California, where his family owned a hardware store. As the fourth of five children, he followed the family practice of going to work in the hardware store at the age of 12. He was taught to talk to everyone and try to help them find the solutions to their problems, even if it meant recommending another business in town.
Paul graduated from UCSB as a 4-year letterman in Crew with a degree in Business Economics. Paul received his Real Estate Sale License in 1977 and moved to Malibu in January of 1978, drawn to the area by the wide open spaces and low crime. In 1982, Paul received his Real Estate Broker’s license and went to work at the Jon Douglas Company as a Broker Associate. He met Sara and her three children in 1987 and they married in 1988. The children went through the local schools and graduated from UC Santa Cruz, Pepperdine, and UCSB
Paul was a candidate in Malibu’s first successful Cityhood Election and was endorsed by the Santa Monica Evening Outlook in June of 1990. Paul was on the first General Plan Task Force and produced the minutes of each of the 24 area meetings, conducted in the first 12 months of cityhood. Paul attended every City Council meeting during the first years of cityhood and continued to read agendas, attend and participate in City Council meetings prior to his successful Campaign and 2020 Election to the current Malibu City Council, where he served for two terms as Mayor.
Paul’s participation in the community includes being a charter member and Board Director of the Kiwanis Club of Malibu and a year as Chairman of the Malibu Chili Cook-off, during his 30 year membership.
Paul has also served as the President of the Malibu Association of Realtors and is currently their Government Affairs Director as well as their representative to a study group representing 26 coastal counties in their dealings with FEMA and the Coastal Commission.
Paul has been a member of the Malibu Chamber of Commerce for many years and served as their government affairs chair.
In 2004, Paul was first appointed by Jeff Jennings to the Public Works Commission, a position he held for 16 years. In 2010, City Manager Jim Thorsen appointed him to a Commission formed to study the District 29 Water System and its shortcomings in the wake of LACO Fire’s increase in the Fire Flow required to rebuild after a fire.
Paul Grisanti was awarded a Malibu Times Dolphin Award (Citizens of the Year) in summer of 2019 for his role in analysing the District 29 water system and promoting Fire rebuilding solutions.
After the Woolsey fire in 2018, Paul wrote and published over 75 columns in the Malibu Times (also available on his Blog) about the Malibu fire, the recovery, rebuilding and being prepared for the next emergency.
Aiming to continue his work on a larger scale, striving to preserve the quality of life in Malibu while embracing sustainable growth and development.
